A guide for parents
AAC communication tools for parents of children with autism
What AAC is, how to choose the right tool, and how ©VocaStep AAC™ — an autism speech therapy support app — helps your child go from a few taps to a full sentence.
AAC, explained for parents
What AAC means
AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication — any tool that helps a person communicate when speech is limited or unreliable. That includes picture cards, sign, and speech-generating apps on a tablet.
AAC supports speech, it doesn't replace it
Many parents worry AAC will stop their child from talking. Research reviews have found AAC does not hold back speech development, and for many children it supports it by giving them a reliable way to be understood.
Why it matters for autism
Many autistic children understand far more than they can say. An AAC communication tool lets them request, refuse, share feelings, and join conversations now — which can reduce frustration for the whole family.

Reel highlights
- AAC = augmentative and alternative communication — any tool that helps someone communicate when speech is limited, from picture boards to speech apps.
- People of every age use AAC — not just kids — and there are no prerequisites to start.
- Myth: "AAC is only a last resort." Fact: the earlier someone starts, the better their language outcomes.
- Myth: "AAC means giving up on speech." Fact: AAC supports speech and takes the pressure off.
- Over 5 million people in the U.S. rely on AAC — including children with autism, apraxia, cerebral palsy, and Down syndrome.
How to choose an AAC communication tool
Talk with your child's speech-language pathologist, then use these questions to compare apps:
- Can your child get to a full message in a few taps, without digging through folders?
- Is it quick for you, the parent, to learn — hours, not weeks?
- Does it build practice and goals into everyday use, not just offer a symbol board?
- Can you see progress over time to share with your child's therapist or school team?
- Is the price realistic for a family, with a trial before you commit?
An autism speech therapy app that works with your child's team
©VocaStep AAC™ was created by Isabella Almvig, an accredited ABA professional, after seeing how often complicated AAC software left children and families frustrated.
2–3 symbols become a full sentence
Your child taps a few icons and the AI in VocaStep AAC builds a natural, complete sentence to speak aloud — no memorizing grammar or navigating deep menus.
ABA-based practice built in
Discreet-trial practice, goals, and milestones use applied behavior analysis strategies, so every session doubles as structured communication practice.
Progress you can share
Track growth over time and bring it to speech therapy, ABA sessions, or IEP meetings so everyone is working toward the same goals.
Learn it in under an hour
Every plan includes free training (45 minutes to 1 hour) with a certificate of completion — compared with the days or months many AAC tools take.

Parent questions, answered
Is VocaStep AAC an autism speech therapy app?
VocaStep AAC is AAC software that supports the communication goals your child works on in speech therapy and ABA. It is not a replacement for a licensed speech-language pathologist or therapist — it's a tool families and professionals use together between and during sessions.
What age is VocaStep AAC for?
It's designed for children with autism (ASD) and other developmental disorders who are building communication skills, and it's simple enough for parents and educators to set up without technical experience.
Does my child need to read?
No. VocaStep AAC is symbol-based, so children communicate by tapping pictures. The app turns those symbols into spoken sentences.
How much does it cost?
Families pay $98.99 per year, and schools and organizations pay half of that — $49.49 per year. One simple yearly price. Training is included.
When can we use it?
